Understanding Dental Emergencies

At Shertok Smiles, we define a dental emergency by two criteria. If you have an oral issue that is causing you serious pain or discomfort, and you cannot treat it on your own, you are experiencing a dental emergency. This includes:

  • Oral injuries, such as impacted teeth,
  • Permanent teeth that are loose or have been knocked-out
  • Serious periodontal disease
  • Severe toothaches
  • Loose, damaged or missing dental work

If you are experiencing one of these problems, come in for an emergency appointment with Dr. Shertok right away.

What To Do During A Dental Emergency

First, you should schedule an appointment with Dr. Shertok. Some dental injuries, like knocked-out teeth, must be treated within about 1-2 hours to save the tooth, and all emergency issues should be treated as soon as possible.

Next, recover your missing tooth or dental work, if applicable. A lost tooth should be rinsed with warm water and replaced in the socket, or put into a small baggie or container of milk. While you wait for your appointment, you can use a clean cloth or cotton balls to treat bleeding, if present. Most of the bleeding should stop within an hour or two. Pain and discomfort can be treated with ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

Aspirin should NOT be used, as it is a blood thinner and will interfere with proper blood clotting. Ice can also be applied externally to mitigate swelling and discomfort. Do not apply ice or an ice pack directly to the injury, only to the outside of the mouth. Once you have treated your pain, bleeding and discomfort, visit Dr. Shertok. He will recommend the proper treatment to resolve your emergency and restore your smile.
